Staying Busy - Focus on Fuse 2012

Well it's been far to long since my last post. Much change has been going on in my life and some new developments. I've been hard at work over the last several months designing and concepting with the design team over at Port City Community Church. I joined the team back in July. I have had the pleasure of working on about 6 or 7 series titles and graphics as well as branding a week of FUSE summer camp.
This post will be focusing on the branding of the FUSE Summer Camp for PC3. The camp session centered around the concept of an old science lab where they talked about elements that are pertinent to you spiritual walk. The Title was simply Elemental.  The art direction given was to be similar to the DHARMA Initiative from the television show LOST.

Below are some photos of the elements that Racheal Dowdy and I created and some of the final videos that were crafted by the Media Team video gurus, Parrish Stikeleather, Joey Connolley and Luke Brown. Here are some graphic elements that were created for the student and counselors alike. Some note taking elements, camp map, t-shirts, name badges and bandannas.

The media team is also responsible for filming and producing videos for the week of camp. The annual treat for FUSE summer camp are the CHIPs Tips videos. Below are a few stills from the days of shooting. We had fun with the Elemental theme and ran with the mad scientist/DHARMA stuff.

As for the camp it was pretty awesome in regards to the activities they had planned. Here are some stills from the week to help give you an idea of what it looked like from day to day

Working on FUSE was a complete BLAST. I can not wait until next year when it comes back around. One of the more comprehensive design projects I have been able to work on.

Purposeful Pinhole

Every now and again you come across something so simple and wonderful that you have to share it with everyone you know. I came across this in my rabbit trails of late night interwebbing and thought that this is worth sharing. I was completely excited to think that i could possibly brighten the day of someone on the the other side of the world, someone who i've never met before. That old saying of a picture is worth a thousand words is taken to another level. I think i'll have to get some of these to send to those that became my family in Thailand and then see about meeting some new family members in some other parts of the world.

Home Made Frames

Well a few weeks back i got it in to my head to make some frames for those wonderful Tin Types Fly took of Julie and i. Everything i saw in the store was way to clean and polished for the photos. They needed a real, weathered feel to them.

I found some old palettes, cut em up (thanks for the help & use of your shop Donnie) and nailed em back together. There are some issues that i need to fix for the frames but over all i am happy with them. The jury is still out on whether or not to darken the frames with a stain or not.

Wet Plate Love

So many people in my life know that i love westerns and the look of all things old. There is something about the look of an old photo that silently speaks to my soul. i hold them in my hands or look at them in antique stores and stories start unfolding and growing in my mind. There is so much character in these old photos that is lacking in much of present day photography.

Julie and i are lucky enough to be friends with a wonderfully talented photographer. We call him Fly. Though the rest of the world probably knows him as Harry Taylor.

The shoot for these photos was a totally awesome! If your interested in getting some make for yourself shoot Fly and email and he'll give you a quote.

Holga Portra 400VC

Well i got some more film back from the great Folks down at Image finishers (http://imagefinishers.com/) and got a few really cool shots to post from a ski trip at the end of January and a Haiti support show i saw early Feb.

I also am in the works of getting a website together to post a greater collection of design, art and fotos that my wife and i have put together over the last few years. I am setting a personal goal to have it up and running by the end of June so we'll see how that goes. As soon as it is up i will post a link here.

On to the art...

Here is Justin Munn, you may know him from a few other shots taken while shredding the guitar on stage with fellow band members of Crimson Refuge. A van full of tired kiddos from our youth group. Good ole Aaron is poking his head out. This was taken with a cheap fisheye and a color gel ringflash. However i am going to have to look into doubling up on the gels cause there really isn't a noticeable difference like those dramatic shots that you see over at the Lomo website. I'll try it out and post back here with some results.



Ok this fellow is Brent Holloman. You may know of him from Beta Radio. This is a shot that was taken at the Satellite Lounge Back earlier this month. Great Tunes! If you get a chance head over to there myspace page http://www.myspace.com/betaradio. If they start playing regularly differently check em out. This was again a colored gell ring flash with little effect from the gels. The background lights were the stars here. I love not knowing what your gonna get when you drop film off at the shop. Little mini Christmas' all year long.

Splitzer time

Basically i grabbed a yogurt container, the one i found that worked best was the Lowes Food brand yogurt. Also grab an aerosol lid. the fit that worked for me was an old 3m Spray mount lid.



I first mashed the 3m lid down into the yogurt cut as far as i could. and made sure that the lid was straight using the ingredient lines to guide me. marked off where the gap in the two containers started. Using a Dremel, i removed half of the aerosol lid and cut down the length as well to the length marked on the outside of the yogurt container.
At this point i mashed the 3m lid down into the yogurt container. This is a tight fit, which practically held itself in place. But i threw a little tape on there for good measure.


It fits both the diana and the holga. Removing just the right amount of the yogurt bottom was the hardest part. I again used the packaging lines as a guide. After playing with this i went back and hot glued the 3m lid to the yogurt container to keep it there and sprayed the whole thing with some flat black spray paint. i have read about people doing this to the insides of there holga to reduce the light bouncing around on the shiny plastic parts onto your film. Was trying to cut down on the lense flare issues on the splitzer. Here is a shot of 35mm that i hacked through the holga. I'll explain that more later. It was fun checking out all the old school Corvettes and seeing them over the years. I must say i like the old ones better.
