Gypsies of the Sea: A Process Video

Had a chance to have a few of the Swimming Machine folks over to see how there poster was made a few weeks back. We talked about how the project starts with roughs and thumbnails and progresses to a final piece. From there the process goes completely analog. Here is a clip they were kind enough to put together and share with me. There was a little bit of an issue with the ink not being exactly like i wanted it to begin with. The dark blue in was the starting point and was lightened to the more teal green/blue later that night.

Congrats are in order to Justin and the Swimming Machine, on having there Kickstarter project completed! Glad to have been able to help them out.

Switchfoot & Anberlin Tour Poster

So i had been trying to get a hold of Switchfoot and Anberlin to partner with them in order to raise support for the Stand Up for Kids organization (SUFK). Here is the scoop on SUFK, the poster and concept.

I would be honored to have your help in supporting this cause. I first was spurred to help after seeing a video encouraging those that attended the show to bring a backpack for a kid in need.




My original plan was to print these posters and give them to Switchfoot and Anberlin to sell on tour and in turn give the funds to SUFK or buy backpacks for kids in need. However, that was not in the cards; so i am going to be selling the posters and sending the money raised to SUFK. I typically don't like selling the posters for to much just so everyone can afford to get there hands on some wonderful screen prints. That said these are a little more expensive.

The price for the poster is $25 (plus $5 s+h). Go in with some friends and save on some shipping if you like i'm totally down with that. The specs on the image are 11.5" x 17" on a 12.5" x 19" sheet of 80 lb paper. I have printed 3 editions of about 50 each. The only difference is the paper color. You can have your pick of French Papers Construction Safety Orange, Duro Tone Packing Brown Wrap or a good ole white paper.

Please keep in mind that the profits will be going to a great cause. (If you want to help another cause and get a poster in the process jump over to Ink Initiative and help my buddy Keith Bowman and his team to make an impact.)

The finger print, in its very nature, is a human element that defines who we are. However, there is so much more to us then the blood and water that make up our bodies. That's where the lion come into the picture (in case you couldn't figure out what it was in the fingerprint). The Lionin the finger print represents inner strength and determination. The strength of those on the street and those fighting to help tomorrow be better for them. I liked that it works in duality.

Thanks for hangin in there to the end. Hopefully you have been encouraged to lend a helping hand. Keep in mind that you can always volunteer in your community and brighten the life of someone else.

Mute Math Print Process

A final update on the Mute Math Poster. The show was last night and man those guys know how to put on a show. Wanted to share a few shots of the process and final shots of the poster. They are currently available at Gravity Records and available in my etsy store shortly.

First and second color down. I always enjoy printing the reds and magentas, they lend themselves to transparency much more so than the blues.





Having to add a bit more red to the ink as it got near to the end of the run. Had a bit more coverage that was being laid down and started getting a little thin.

Aphasic Algebra Poster

Many of you have been following along with the Dribbble posts that i have been making for the upcoming Mute Math poster. I am please to announce that the art work is finally finished and the film has been printed, paper ordered and screens coated. Looks like i might be able to pull these bad boys this coming week. As always the poster will be a limited edition. I am planning on having a hand full available as pre-sale posters at a discount to all you folks that have been kind enough to read along and watch the poster unfold. Now on to the details and process of the poster. I had some fun with the Dribbble post for the Mute Math poster. Aphasic Algebra is a silly renaming of the band, Mute Math. I wanted to drop a hint as to what the project would be much like the little tidbits of imagery that Dribbble showcases. It very well may have been the late night that made me THINK it was brilliant and clever to name it Aphasic Algebra. The band is touring in support of their forthcoming album, out Oct 4th. I was super excited to know that they were going to be stopping in our backyard here in Wilmington NC. The inspiration for the poster imagery came from the title of the album Odd Soul. What does a soul look like, then what does an odd soul look like? Had some ideas that just didn't quite add up and didn't work with the rest of the poster. These guys always seem to be dressed in suits when ever they preform. I'd like to think is due to the New Orleans roots.

MUTE MATH Odd Soul Tour

I am pleased to share that Mute Math is coming to Wilmington on their Odd Soul Tour. They will be stopping by the Soapbox on Sept 13th. I have to say that i am looking forward to feeling the walls and floor move with the swaying of the souls inside.

It is wonderful to have friends with connections and that like the work that you are producing. After talking about wanting to produce a poster for the Mute Math show, my wonderful friend, Mr Holloman, was ale to get the band to give me the go ahead to produce a poster for the show.

To be honest, i liked the idea of producing posters for shows when the bands didn't know i was doing them. The pressure was a lot less intense. Now i find that i have placed myself in a pressure cooker to make it the most amazing poster yet. I have started poster and have a sneak peek for you to look at over on my Dribbble page.

In case you're not familiar with Mute Math i highly suggest you check them out. You need to check out some of there videos. Here is one of there recent vids that i am in love with.

I'll keep you posted on how the poster is progressing.

Hopscotch Posterscotch

So as many of you know, music and art are two of my favorite things. I found out about this event called Hopscotch through the wonderful peeps over at Gravity Records. Matt Keen is a social media giant, as well as vinyl enthusiast, who turned me on to the event one day in a tweet.

Hopscotch Music Festival is a 3 day music through down. This years even is being headlined by Flaming Lips and Guided by voices. They also announced the first POSTERscotch to coincide with the Hopscotch Festival. Posterscotch is basically a way to promote local North Carolina Artist who specialize in the Gig Poster realm. To kick off the inaugural event they opened up a contest for any North Carolina artist to put together a poster for the event. The only stipulations were it had to contain the dates of the event, Raleigh and Hopscotch Music Festival.

Here are all the posters that were entered. It was a long weekend of tweeting and facebooking friends to try and round up more votes. There was quite the battle for facebook dominance before a victor finally emerged. Finally with a lead of only 15 votes a poster was announced the winner and participant in a gallery show showcasing the talents of 9 other NC artists. It was Gravity Record's own Sarah Parson, 1/2 of the Posterhound Family Workshop.

I put up a fight and came in third, but was able to celebrate with Eric and Sarah over pancakes this week. We talked about the poster and we taped together the film and began to burn the screens to make her Hopscotch poster. Be sure to check it all out this coming Sept 8-10, 2011.
Many of my sketches can be seen over on my Dribbble page. But here are some other shots of the process and my contribution to the contest. Maybe i'll have better luck next year with rounding up some facebook love to make it into the galleried exhibit. So start spreading the word folks.

Here is my initial sketch, followed by a refined sketch to try and figure out where the type should best be seated in the poster. And of course the final image that was lovingly crafted.




If you're like my wife, you wondering what the crap a cat in a space suit has to do with anything. I've also heard someone ask "I always do wonder, though, why gig posters are so hard to read whilst walking by?" Well the way i see it is simple. You have this wonderful area of space that you get to create within. You can make the type huge so you can read it across the street OR you can make a compelling image that will catch someones eye and cause them to travel across the street to take a closer look. At that point you have them. They are visually digesting the poster and Oh look, there is information about a show coming up. Being an illustrator at heart, i will always put images over type. Well unless its beautifully crafted hand rendered type such as the likes of Jessica Hische. Then you can have a big poster where the info is center stage, cause really it is an art piece by the time she gets done with it.

So back to "Why a can in space?" So basically that is summed up with this...Flaming Lips are headlining. Period. I felt that the sky was the limit for this based solely on the fact that they were headlining. The Flaming Lips are so creative with there live performances and music that i wanted to try and create something that would lend itself to being part of there act or something. I mean when you hear stories of fans bring them there poop and talking about it like some sort of experience and right of passage, a cat in a space suit seems sorta tamed right?

Enjoying My Fifteen Minutes

Ok, so this is a shameless plug...but Brian Tucker over at the Star News here in Wilmington NC has put together an article that talks about a few of my posters. I am proud of it and wanted to share it with you.



I was very impressed with Brian Tucker as we talked about the articles and artists that he has written about. Tucker impressed me as a guy that acknowledges that there is more going on around our community than we know. He wants to take time to help shed some light on local creatives and given them a bit of a platform, even if for only those coveted "fifteen minutes".

Thank you Brian Tucker for taking an interest in my art/posters and putting the article together. It feels good to know that my work made you stop and pause for a moment. I hope that i can help give a platform to others and encourage them in there endeavors in the future as well.

Love Language Poster

Here are some type development and color schemes i am working on for an upcoming poster and show. Still trying to decide whether i should type set the rest of the info or use the hand written type as well.

The magenta and cyan are a palette that i enjoy but also felt it lent itself to the boy meets girl aspect of the songs. Lots of songs about relationships both good and bad. Well see how it turns out when its finished.

Do Horses Swim?

Last night UNCW hosted Tyler Ramsey and Beta Radio in the Burney Center. If you missed it, your loss. It had been a while since i have enjoyed as intimate of a show as was delivered to those who came out. You may know of Tyler Ramsey as he has been touring with Band Of Horses for a spell now. If not I encourage you to stop by your local record store to see if they have a copy.

I, unfortunately, forgot the camera to snap some shots of the show. Fortunately, Millie Holloman was handy with her iPhone to snap some shots of the event. I have to mention again that Tyler was one of the most down to earth musician i have had the pleasure to meet.

Beta Radio cam e out and warmed up the crowd nicely.












Also put some personal projects on hold to make some room for making a poster for the event. There were a few concepts that i bounced around before i had had a chance to listen to Tyler's music. It was his title track, A Long Dream, that stuck with me and helped steer the direction posters. It was a quick and simple idea of and underwater dream. What might that look like?

I wanted it to be a slightly odd portrait of Tyler. Just a hint of juxtaposition in the imagery. If you remember your dreams, you're aware that some things just don't add up. They're off ever so slightly that you don't pick up on it till after your awake. It would be perfectly normal for a guy to walk around the street with goggles and a snorkel in a dream, right? Well it would in mine. Put him underwater and in a button down western style shirt and you start wondering a little bit. Am i in another "Weekend at Burnie's"

Here is the rough sketch of the type. Didn't stray to much from here to the final.

Here is the first color thought. I liked the contrast that i could get but the magenta was to punchy. I wanted to cultivate the underwater color scheme of blues and greens.


Then came this option. I liked the addition of green into the palette, but felt the contrast in the portrait would not survive once over printed. Shift the visual weight to the bottom of the poster and add some air bubbles and i think we're ready to roll.



I ended up going with the call to make the drawing the dark blue and shading in green and over print the "sea" with a light blue.

While i was taking in the show i tried to get some sketching in. I have always wondered how character designers capture people when out sketching in public. I have the hardest time with this. Again, my admiration goes up for all you character designers out there.
